I’m at it again. Writing controversial blog posts. Jack will have his baseball bat out yet again.

Clik here to view. But I want to explain why ArcGIS SUCS.
ArcGIS SUCS
Now I often do not follow conventional wisdom. I like to step back and look at the big picture. I try to base my opinions not on what I am told, but what I observe, and hear. This is why I have come to the conclusion ArcGIS SUCS.
Now I do think the new platform is a significant advance. Its easier to work with, and comes loaded with so many new services and applications. New is good. A plethora of new tools and services is fantastic. But all of the focus put here is why ArcGIS SUCS.
Its broken record week, since I seemed to have repeated this in a number of posts over the last 7 days. But starting with the technology: a configurable app, storymap .. blah blah blah is starting in the middle.
Success with ArcGIS .. requires
Understanding
Curiosity … and the
Story
Hopefully Jack has just put the bat down. Let me explain where I am going here.
Don’t try to provide a solution before you know the problem. Why would I show a water company a series of flood focused storymaps if their service area is on-top of a hill ie. flooding is irrelevant?? What I am saying is don’t lead conversations with a solution – let me show you this pre-configured ArcGIS app which I’m guessing, maybe its possible you will need!
Repeat after me ArcGIS SUCS.
Success is based on:
Understanding – This is mutual understanding. You understand the clients problem and the client has an idea (at a high level) of what GIS might bring to the table.
Curiosity – With understanding hopefully comes curiosity: “Tell me a little more”, “I’m interested”. That is curiosity.
Story – Often ignored. This is the art of painting pictures. And it truly is an art. My colleague Matt is a master here. Often the conversation circles around data. We sometimes call this phase GIS imagineering. Where are you today and where do you want to be tomorrow. Imagining, projecting, story-boarding… its all of these and more.
SUCS means starting at the beginning.
A call to action. Now you have an understanding of why I suggest ArcGIS SUCS, you might be curious. See how we unfold the story by reading about our from Where to There process …… for more feel free to give us a call on 801-733-0723.
You see, WebMapSolutions SUCS too!
